Union College Policy on Transfer Credits (for full-time day students)
COMMITTEE ON TRANSFER CREDITS
2004

1. Union College will consider granting transfer credit for a course taken while the student is enrolled in high school only if the course is taken on the campus of the college/university offering the course and the course is available for enrollment by the students of that college/university and the grades were C or better. No other courses will receive Union College course credit.

2. A matriculating freshman can transfer in a maximum of 4 course credits through any combination of Advanced Placement examinations, the International Baccalaureate Program*, or college courses taken at other post-secondary institutions. Appropriate scores for granting credit for AP examinations or IB courses are determined by the individual academic departments at the College. ( * For students completing the Full Diploma in the international Baccalaureate program, see the catalog under International Baccalaureate)

3. After matriculation at Union College, a student may transfer in a maximum of 3 course credits for courses taken through other institutions (in non-Union approved programs of study). Prior approval must be obtained for these courses from the appropriate department chair and the Dean of Studies. Permission is normally granted only if the student is behind in course credits or if there are compelling programmatic reasons. If a student in not behind in credits, any such courses may not be used for purposes of accelerated graduation.

4. Students who enter Union College with 3 or more AP and/or College credits may petition the Dean of Studies to graduate one term early. Otherwise students are expected to spend the full four years at the College or in College-approved programs. (This rule does not apply to Union Scholars).

5. For cross-registration involving the Hudson-Mohawk consortium, please consult the catalog under that heading. Students who have attained junior status will not be allowed to cross-register for courses at a two-year college unless specifically approved by the Dean of Studies.

Policy updated 2004.
